Shortlist for 2009 Excellence in Local Government Awards Announced

Published: Saturday August 15, 2009

Chambers Ireland has today (15/08/09) announced the shortlist for the 2009 Excellence in Local Government Awards which will be held in association with the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The awards are also supported by Boots, Energia and Mullingar Crystal.

Announcing the shortlist, Ian Talbot, Chief Executive, Chambers Ireland said, “Local authorities play a crucial role in ensuring that both businesses and communities operate and live in environments that befit their needs. These awards provide a unique platform to showcase the positive relationships that exist between businesses, chambers and local authorities. Every sector faces significant challenges and local government can play its part by facilitating cost effective but excellent services.”

Commenting on the shortlisted nominees, Mr. John Gormley, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, remarked, “Local government makes a huge contribution to the economy and to our daily lives through the range of services it provides.  Excellence in public service delivery and consistent high standards of performance should be acknowledged and highlighted.”

“Today’s announcement of the nominees for the Chambers Ireland 2009 Excellence in Local Government Awards serves to showcase the important and valuable work being undertaken by local authorities across the country and their continuing drive for innovation and value for money in services delivery.  My Department is delighted to be associated with the Awards and I offer my heartiest congratulations to those short listed today."

Taking place on Wednesday 28th October in the Burlington Hotel Dublin, awards will be presented for a total of fourteen categories covering areas including: Arts and Culture; Outstanding Customer Service; Energy Conservation; Waste Management; Partnership with business; and Social and Community Development. Awards will also be presented to the Local Authority of the Year and, new to 2009, the Town & Borough Council of the Year.
