Aldi – Aldi Ireland Origin Green Plan

Aldi Ireland conducts its business in line with the fundamental principles of Corporate Responsibility (CR). These CR principles summarise Aldi’s commitments to people and planet. Aldi commenced its Origin Green journey in September 2017, with the objective to become a verified member of Origin Green by March 2018. Origin Green, the world’s first national food sustainability programme developed by Bord Bia allowed Aldi to put in place a 5 year plan, emphasising the businesses commitment to sustainability. Through this plan, Aldi identified and focused on areas in which environmental improvements across the business could be made, placing a strong emphasis on waste reduction, particularly across the supply chain and the Aldi store network. This includes operational waste, food waste, packaging waste and recovering energy from waste. Aldi’s Origin Green plan has enabled Aldi to align their CR objectives with the sustainability targets outlined in the Origin Green Initiative.

BioMarin International Ltd. – Making BioMarin site and local area more environmentally friendly

The Ringaskiddy area is home to a huge amount of companies predominately involved with the Pharmaceutical industry. With thousands of people commuting to the area every day, a large energy consumption and build-up of litter and waste is inevitable. However, these factors can be minimised and BioMarin is doing its part to ensure this. The past year at BioMarin has seen huge advancements in energy saving technologies as well as a massive push from staff in terms of volunteering and making a difference in the area. This initiative incorporates all the positive aspects of BioMarin’s corporate social responsibility ethos in terms of communication, collaboration and achieving goals. BioMarin strives to keep up good relations with the local community and become as environmentally friendly as possible.

HEINEKEN Ireland – Reducing CO₂ Emissions “Drop the C” in HEINEKEN Ireland

Heineken’s ambition is to Brew a Better World across the entire value chain, from Barley to Bar. They focus on six areas where Heineken and their stakeholders believe they can have the biggest impact. Reducing Carbon emissions is one of the six areas. In 2017 HEINEKEN Ireland focused on reducing CO₂ emissions across the value chain – from brewing their beer and fermenting their cider to looking at how they transport it, cool it, and deal with their waste. Under the banner “Drop the C” Heineken Ireland reduced emissions from production by 6%, in distribution by 9%, purchased 100% green fridges and achieved zero waste to landfill.

Intel Ireland – Biodiversity at Intel

Intel Ireland has a long history of supporting biodiversity and since first arriving at their campus in Leixlip in 1989 they have worked to enhance, restore and create biodiverse habitats. Intel have ensured continual improvement in this area by embedding biodiversity into their Environmental Management System. Intel Ireland work closely with their communities on biodiversity initiatives. This project aimed to include biodiversity as a part of Intel Ireland’s Environmental Management System (EMS), by developing a series of projects to help improve biodiversity on site and in the local community.

Intel Ireland used the BITC Biodiversity Framework to shape their approach on their existing work and to articulate a set of actions which would demonstrate their plans for leadership in biodiversity.

Outcomes included Intel employees engaging in weeding, bird watching, biodiversity workshops, and Intel Ireland planted a wildflower meadow across two acres to support pollinators such as Bees and Hoverflies. 

Lidl Ireland – A Better Tomorrow

The Project involved the development of a sustainability strategy with clear targets and KPIs from Jan 2017 onwards. Lidl joined Bord Bia’s Origin Green Sustainable Development programme in 2017 to achieve 3rd party verification of their process and demonstrate credible progress towards their targets. Lidl Ireland developed targets to be achieved by 2020, in areas such as waste emissions, energy, water, responsible sourcing of products, health and nutrition and social sustainability. Major environmental achievements on the ‘A Better Tomorrow’ project in 2017 included: ISO50001 energy management accreditation which was extended to all operations, zero waste to landfill for the 1st time, a battery recycling campaign and a food redistribution programme, which saw Lidl donate over 149 tonnes of food to 263 charities nationwide. Lidl also launched its renewable energy programme and certified many of its own-brand to sustainability programmes, including all of its palm oil in food products and cocoa.
