Effective Local Government
« Back

Chambers of Commerce are key drivers of local economic development and therefore have a strong interest in local government policy and in working with local government authorities and agencies.

The responsibility of the Ratepayers and Local Government Council is to drive the policies of Chambers Ireland in relation to local government. The council also has a role to play in the formulation of Chambers Ireland policy and in the constantly evolving relationship with the people in charge of implementing government directives at a local level.

Local authorities rely heavily on the business community to fund their operations.  This issue is especially worrying given that central government continues to place additional burdens and service expectations on local authorities without providing adequate resources from the Central Exchequer to fund them.   Over €2bn of local government funding is sourced from commercial rates alone and businesses are also subject to a host of other local authority charges including those for water, waste, development levies, signage and street furniture to name just a few.  It follows that, the business community has a deep interest in the efficiency and management of local government structures.
