In recognition of the growing importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in enhancing corporate reputations and the communities in which Irish business operates, Chambers Ireland has worked to highlight CSR activities throughout the country and develop practical policies and guidelines to encourage the development of CSR programmes.

The concept of CSR encompasses the ways in which a business contributes to a better society by actively engaging with and consulting stakeholders, including customers, employees, shareholders and the local community, in a manner that goes beyond the company's financial and legal obligations. Through CSR, companies are working voluntarily to integrate social and environmental concerns into their everyday business operations.

CSR has been shown to result in a number of business benefits, including: customer attraction and retention; increased brand value and reputation; attraction and retention of staff; better corporate governance; increased revenues; and improved efficiency.

Chambers Ireland's CSR Council is focused on developing and promoting best practice in CSR and initiatives to promote awareness of the potential of CSR among SMEs. Chaired by Aidan Power, the Council comprises a number of high profile business leaders and CSR specialists.

Research has shown that consumers give preference to companies that adopt CSR practices. According to the 2002 Edelman Strategy One Survey of Opinion Leaders, 76% would switch to a company with strong CSR practices, if price and quality are equal to non- CSR competitors. In the same survey, 75% surveyed reported they would give a CSR company the "benefit of the doubt” if the company were subjected to negative publicity.

The Chambers Ireland President's Awards for Corporate Social Responsibility were established in 2004 to recognise the work being carried out by Irish and multinational companies to improve the lives of their employees and to enhance the civic environment in which they operate.
