An Post, Intel & Microsoft: Log on, Learn

Log on, Learn was a joint initiative between An Post, Intel and Microsoft, after all three had identified the problem of computer literacy among our aging population. The premise of Log on, Learn was to target younger people, older people and teachers and bring them together in the classroom and the community. Students and Older people meet in the school setting at eight, weekly training sessions of one-two hours’ duration. The student communicates their knowledge of how to use a pc and mouse, basic word processing and internet skills as well as the all important confidence to overcome the ‘fear factor’ surrounding ‘new technologies’. The Older Person in return shares their ability to communicate their memories of culture and their valuable life experience. Log on, Learn has overcome the stigma and barriers which many older people have experienced around a) asking for assistance with computer literacy b) achieving real, self oriented results which improve quality of life, whether communicating with family and friends, online shopping, research for a hobby or booking tickets online.
