Kenmare Resources plc.: Kenmare – Moma Development Association

Kenmare Resources plc has a titanium minerals mine at Tupuito, a remote area of Northern Mozambique. There is a department responsible for community relations, environment and health & safety, however to take a development approach to this very disadvantaged area and to emphasise engagement by the community, Kenmare established the independent KMAD in 2004. KMAD’s focus is on capacity and capability building. Activities are concentrated in the seven villages a 10km radius of the mine, with a population of 10,000 people. Most are subsistence farmers and fishermen living on less than $1/day, life-expectancy is 42, malaria is endemic and severe, and only incomplete primary education is available. Logistically the area is extremely challenging and the infrastructure created for the mine has facilitated accelerated development for the community. KMAD runs and supports projects in education, income generation, health, savings & credit, sports, food security and has a fund to support community initiatives.
