Regional Job Momentum Must Be Maintained

Aug 26, 2015

Chambers Ireland today (26/08/15) welcomes the latest Quarterly National Household Survey which shows continual growth in employment figures.

Commenting on the Survey’s publication, Ian Talbot, Chief Executive of Chambers Ireland, said: “The ongoing reduction in unemployment numbers is very positive and indicates that Ireland has at last entered a new phase of economic growth.”

“Critically, the latest figures show that job creation has spread to all regions and is no longer limited to our main urban areas. It is furthermore very positive to see how the number of self-employed is growing at a faster rate than employees.”

“Increasing the number of indigenous businesses and entrepreneurs is vital to ensuring a sustainable job market which provides local employment opportunities in all our regions. In order to drive this momentum, we urge Government to use Budget 2016 as a tool to make entrepreneurship even more attractive, notably by ensuring that self-employed people no longer are penalised under our tax system.”

“We also believe that more can be done to advance regional business growth and call on Government to incentivise Local Authorities to ring fence a portion of commercial rates for local economic development through a match funding program from the Exchequer”.
