ELG Winners 2009
The winners of the 2009 Excellence in Local Government Awards were:
Dublin City Council for the Dublin: One City, One Book initiative which encourages an interest in reading and literature while raising awareness of the importance of blood donation through their partnership with the Irish Blood Transfusion Service in 2009.
Boots Partnership with Business Award
Dublin City Council for the Business Improvement District which delivers street ambassadors and additional cleaning services to the streetscape of Dublin City Centre.
County/City Development Board Integrated Service Delivery Award
Donegal County Council for the Keeping Warm Community Initiative, a fuel poverty awareness campaign targeting the most at risk members of the community.
Economic Development Award
Galway City Council for their organisation of the Galway Stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race which involved a number of improvements to the city in the areas of planning, transport and environment.
Energia Energy Conservation Award
Tralee Town Council for the Tobar Naofa Wood Chip Heating District Scheme, an environmentally friendly and energy efficient under floor heating system for the Tobar Naofa apartments.
Environmental Initiative Award
Roscommon County Council for providing Anglers Toilet Facilities for People with Disabilities, an environmentally friendly facility which relies solely on wind, sun and heat energy to generate power.
Outstanding Customer Service Award
South Dublin County Council for providing a Self-Service Digital Space at the County Library, Tallaght which allows users to access the internet, print and top up library cards independently of staff.
Planning Service Award
Dublin City Council for ePlanning, a unique online initiative providing a quicker and more efficient way to process planning applications.
Social and Community Development Award
Fingal County Council for Sporting Fingal, a community based football club which provides opportunities for all members of the community to come together and get involved.
Sports and Recreation Award
South Dublin County Council for the Allotments facilities which offers members of the community an opportunity to grow fruit, vegetables and plants in a social environment and for Tallaght Stadium, a community facility with Shamrock Rovers as anchor tenants which provides a broad range of social and economic benefits to the community.
Limerick City Council for the Online Burial Records Service which provides the community with detailed burial records allowing them to track their genealogy from 1855 onwards.
Waste Management Award
Drogheda Borough Council for the Big Hog Recycling Project, which recycles food waste from school breakfasts and lunches into garden compost for school gardening projects.
